Hyperthyroidism
Causes, symptoms, treatment
There are various thyroid diseases. A functional disorder of the thyroid gland is hyperthyroidism, which may occur as a result of various diseases. One of the diseases that can cause the hyperthyroidism is Graves' disease.
Another thyroid disease is the autonomy (hot nodules) of the thyroid gland. An overdose of thyroid hormones may also cause hyperthyroidism. An overactive thyroid may cause different symptoms.
The classic symptoms are mental agitation, palpitations, weight loss, sweating and irritability. Hair loss or shakiness can also be a symptom of this disease. However, hyperthyroidism can also occur completely without symptoms, especially in older patients.
Overactive thyroid glands must always be treated because they put a strain on the heart. The treatment depends on the underlying disease. It can be treated with medication, surgery or radio-iodine therapy.
